ROUND TWO

Bunyan 2016 Wrap UpThe Bunyan 2016
00:00

The 52nd Paul Bunyan Amateur Golf Tournament concluded on Sunday at Falmouth Country Club-- another flawless summer day provided the backdrop to an exciting day of competitive play at "Maine's premier competitive venue."

As play began Sunday morning, Round 1's concluding leaderboard began to change. Will Kannegieser maintained his first place position throughout the round, but Lon Winchester gave up his top place position as he struggled on the front nine. By contrast, Chris Cloutier, Nate McCue and Dave "Gonzo" Gonyar, who had concluded round 1 in a three-way tie for fourth place, all rose to occupy the top slots of the day along with Kannegieser.

At the conclusion of play, A-Flight saw Cloutier and Kannegieser finish the round tied for overall first place (147). As preparation for a sudden-death playoff began, Mr. Kannegieser unexpectedly asked for a ruling-- from the day before, on hole #15 at Penobscot Valley. A review of USGA rules determined that he had, in fact, been in violation of USGA Rule #15 (Wrong Ball) and had completed the hole. In doing so he had disqualified himself from the tournament. Kannegeiser's honesty and integrity--embodying the spirit of the game-- meant that the victory and title of Overall Champion went at that moment to a well-deserving Chris Cloutier. Nate McCue then became the first place gross A-Flight winner with a two-day score of 154 and Dave Gonyar took 2nd gross for A-flight with a 155. Lon Winchester's final net score of 145 ensured his spot as the 1st place A-flight Net winner, with Matt Tario (150) and Andy Nickerson (151) taking 2nd and 3rd place net, respectively.

In the B-flight, Tom Frey finished with a 162 to take 1st gross, Jayson Adams took 2nd gross with a 163 and Colby Snell's 169 secured his spot as B-flight's 3rd place gross winner. Our net B-Flight winners were Peter Hughes with a 145 to claim first place, Sam Kenton with a  net score of 146 to place second, and Calvin Beal and Darin Hill tied for 3rd place with matching net scores of 152.

Bob Davis was our gross first place winner in C-flight with a 168. Keith Doughty took 2nd place with a 179, and Brian Ayers was our third place winner with a 181. Chip Haskell took 1st place net amongst C-flight players with a 145, while Brian King and Zack Gessman finished tied for 2nd place Net, both turning in scores of 152.

In the Senior Division, A-flight, the top three gross slots were held by Tim Roach, Tom Kus and Jerry Glidden, with scores of 154, 156 and 157, respectively. Our Net A-flight Senior winners were Richard Campbell with a net score of 131, Walt Epply with a 136 and Kevin Hughes with a 140.

Our gross B-Flight Senior winners were Jim Weaver with a 175, Greg Douglas with a 185 and Tim McLaughlin with a 186. Net winners in Senior B-flight were Robert Kogelis with a 132 to secure first place, Brian Bicknell in 2nd place with a 138 and Norman Plourde turning in a 143 to secure third place.

And so a weekend of spectacular weather, spirited competition, and exceptional golf at two legendary Maine Clubs draws to a close. A field comprised of golfers from six states and two countries heads home. Bunyan #52 is in the books-- Bunyan #53 is now on deck!

Congratulations and thank you to all of our players at the 52nd Paul Bunyan Amateur Golf Tournament. We're looking forward to seeing everyone again next time, when we can all once again ask… How's your Bunyan?
