DAY 1 UPDATES

Bunyan Update: Round 1!The 2016 Bunyan
00:00

It was a picture perfect Maine summer day-- temps in the low 80s, a light breeze, sunshine and wall-to-wall blue sky. Against this backdrop, day one of the 52nd Paul Bunyan Amateur Golf Tournament took place. Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono hosted the event, which included players from all over-- from Maine to Georgia to New Brunswick and all points between. What a day!

Play began in the morning and leaders began to emerge soon after. In the A-Flight, Will Kannegieser was among the first to post a red number, leading the field with a -2 score of 34 after nine holes. Lon Winchester turned in a -3 score at the turn, briefly overtaking Kannegieser. Winchester's lead disappeared, however, as Kannegieser played a strong back nine that included a spectacular eagle on the par four 17th! At the conclusion of round one, our top five A-flighters show Will Kannegiser holding his lead with a 68 (-4) and Lon Winchester in 2nd place with a 69 (-3) Chris Taylor and Matt Tarrio are tied for third with matching scores of par (72), and a three way tie for fifth place is held by Nate McCue, Chris Cloutier and Dave "Gonzo" Gonyar, each turning in a 73 (+1) after 18 holes.

In the B-Flight, Jayson Adams and Tom Frey are tied for first place at 76, with Adams turning in an almost perfect round of par on the back nine and Frey making birdie on the 7th and 11th holes. Peter Hughes, Colby Snell and Jeff Teunisen round out the top 5 B-flighters with scores of 78, 79 and 80, respectively. Bob Davis currently leads C-Flight with a score of 78 (+6). C-flight's remaining top five players are Keith Doughty (84), Chip Haskell (86), Brian King (87) and Sean Kirby (88).

In the Senior Division, A-Flight was led by Jerry Glidden. Glidden's front nine started out strong as he birdied the first three holes in a row and turned in a fourth on the par five 7th. Glidden finished his round today with a 70 (-2) to take the A-flight Senior lead. Only one stroke behind was Tom Kus, turning in the only other red number of the A-flight Seniors a 71 (-1). Tim Roach finished at even par (72), Reid Birdsall finished at 77 (+5) and Richard Campbell turned in a 78 (+6). In the Senior B-Flight, congratulations are in order to Jim Weaver, who currently leads (85). Norm Plourde holds 2nd place at 86, Brett Baber holds the third position at 87 and Robert Kogelis and Harry Hall finish the Senior B-Flight top 5 with scores of 89 and 92, respectively.

The action-- and the sunshine--continue tomorrow morning as the final round of the 52nd Bunyan heads south to take place at Maine's premier competitive venue, Falmouth Country Club. Tomorrow's pairings (reflecting our championship flight adjustments) are now posted.
